Overview

Transportation underpins daily life in the United States, yet road safety remains a national crisis, with over 370,000 transportation-related deaths between 2011 and 2020. Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) promise safer roads, but today’s systems are limited to specific operating conditions and still fall short of full autonomy.
Remote or teleoperated driving, powered by 5G, offers a practical bridge by allowing human operators to assist vehicles when needed. However, real-world 5G networks face critical latency challenges due to mobility-induced signal fluctuations and frequent handovers, which can severely impact performance.
DRIVE-SAFE tackles these barriers by developing mobility-aware, low-latency networking solutions and integrating 5G with C-V2X for cooperative driving. Through phased testing on the NSF POWDER testbed and pilot demonstrations at Mcity, the project aims to advance safe, reliable remote and cooperative driving over next-generation wireless networks.
